Drawing can be chasing clues into the unknown with a line and looking around. Sometimes we can bring back news.

Aftermath is the name of these recent drawings on black, piercing-peeking through the ash of a real fire.

There may be birds hiding behind them or flying above them. I’m watching for these.

Two works from the before times are here talking to us today. Thank you for seeing and being in conversation, with Forrest’s adventurous and sensitive ceramic work in this exhibition.

January 2026: sad news – a fire has destroyed half a block of downtown Arcata, including the 10th St studios – many paintings & drawings perished. (humans were not injured)

Long Distance exquisite corpse – Ted Joans

Ted Joans’ masterpiece of collaborative drawing, Long Distance (in which I have a very tiny part by having drawn the last panel), is on display as part of the large exhibition “Surrealism Beyond Borders” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY. The show later travels to the Tate Modern in London. Ted began Long Distance in London in 1976 and invited participants to contribute (132 in all) over many years and regions of the world. It was never sent through the mail, only hand-carried. More wonderful works of Ted’s and of many Surrealists (et ses alentours) around the world are included in the exhibition and catalogue.  This is only the second time the original Long Distance has been shown in public: the world première was the beautiful David Hammons exhibition at Maumaus Lumiar Cité in Lisbon, in 2019.  Ted Joans Lives!

Video of the show released by the Met, with curator Stephanie D’Alessandro.
